Activities

Buchan is an adventure and nature lover’s paradise that is unspoilt and “off the beaten track”. Besides visiting the Buchan caves, there are plenty of other activities in and around Buchan. Whether you are keen on exploring the area on a motorbike, love 4-wheel driving, horse riding, playing golf or you want something relaxing like koala, bird and kangaroo spotting; all these activities are available to you.

Buchan Cave Tours

Multiple tours are conducted each day except Christmas Day.

Hike & Bike Trails

There are various hiking and biking trails, for beginner through to advanced in and around Buchan. Please come and see us for recommendations.

White Water Rafting Tours

The rapids in this area are max level 2, however the Snowy and Mitta Mitta can produce quality rafting on up to grade 5 rapids.

As rivers are created by mother nature, operation depends heavily on the season and weather conditions.

There is also Canoeing on the Buchan river. Talk to us about your plans.

Horse Riding

We partner with a local farm that provides exploration horse riding tours through the Gelantipy region.

They run various trips all year around and tours vary from 1-hour, 2-hour, full day and multi day treks, cater for all rider levels from beginner to advanced.

The full day and multi day treks have pick-ups from our motel (On a request basis).

For the 1-hour and 2-hour trail rides you need to find your own way to the stables.

Golf Course

The Buchan Valley Golf Course is located in Buchan South. Surrounded by the racecourse and bush, this course is a 9-hole course with sand scrapes, has alternating tees, which create 18 holes in all.

Men’s 9-holes is played on Wednesdays and 18-holes every Sunday.

Ladies 18-holes is played on Thursdays.

In November and December there is a fantastic display of wildflowers.

Shooting Range

Buchan Rifle Range (500m) has newly renovated facilities and permits up to .50 calibre and muzzle brakes.

Monthly midweek shoot – every 3rd Wednesday of the month (open 10am-4pm)

Monthly weekend shoot – every 4th Sunday of the month (open 10am-4pm)

Bird Watching

Buchan truly is a bird watchers paradise with a plethora different species on offer, including but not limited to Bellbirds, Lyrebirds, Cockatoos, Rosellas, Lorikeets and Robins.

Native Australian Animals

We have possible Kangaroo and other native Australian animal spotting at the Motel.

As we are located in a rural area it is common to see native animals in public areas.

Be especially careful when driving at night as to avoid Kangaroos and Wombats.

A short drive away is Raymond Island, rated in the top 3 spots for viewing Koalas in the wild.

Fishing

Fishing opportunities are plentiful in East Gippsland with a wide variety of styles on offer (Fly Fishing, Surf Fishing, River/Estuary Fishing, and Game Fishing).

Fish species that can be caught in the area include Bream, Bass (Snowy and Buchan river), Trout (Timbarra river), Gummies, Flathead, Luderick, Mullet, Perch, Trevally, Whiting, Salmon, Morwong, Pinkies and Nanagi to name a few.

SIBA is a local spiritual retreat that offers regular Yoga and Meditation workshops.

Ontos Organic Farm

Ontos was established as a working organic farm in 1977 and was the 5th farm in Australia to be certified organic.

It is possible to take a farm tour for a small fee, on a request basis.

This farm is proud supporter of the WOOF (Willing Workers On Organic Farms) program.
